Cate Blanchett plays Lydia Tar, a passionate composer-conductor who heads the Berlin Philharmonic. While at the peak of her celebrated powers Tar’s ruthlessness, sense of certainty and indiscreet liaisons with young women cause her life to unravel.
Blanchett says that the film is about power and the cost of striving for excellence in a changing world. “It’s a really important thing to grapple with, how can we strive for excellence with the same degree of rigour and demand that excellence takes, but do it respectfully?” she said.
