The Newcastle Film Society acknowledges the Awabakal and Worimi people as the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and live, and pay our deepest respects to Elders past, present and future.
This comedy is based on the strange true story of Maurice Flitcroft, a Barrow-in-Furness shipyard worker and amateur golfer who took up the sport in middle-age.
Flitcroft practised golf on the beach and became known for entering the British Open golf championship in 1976 as a self-declared professional, thus circumventing the handicap requirement for amateurs.
He found himself competing with the likes of Seve Ballesteros, chalking up the worst score in the tournament’s history. The golf establishment tried to ban him, but he kept on gate-crashing competitions in disguises and using false names.
